Now Hiring - Generalists Wanted!

Monday, April 29, 2013 6:53 am

Have you ever seen a job vacancy advertising for Generalists? No – That’s because there aren’t any. There are certainly HR Generalists and IT Generalists. But no one is hiring for someone who can do almost anything. So your application shouldn’t be written in this fashion.

Why then do I see that almost everyone’s CV/Résumé screams out “I’m a generalist and can do almost anything”?

I know you want to cover as many bases as you can, but if I’m hiring for a IT Network Engineer, I really don’t care if you’ve been a Project Support Officer, or a Data Entry person. Sure, it will be good to know once I can establish that you have the IT Network experience I’m after, but firstly I want to know everything about you in relation to being the IT Network Engineer I want to hire.

If I’m hiring for a OH&S Advisor, I don’t want to read about your supervising experience, or overseas deployments unless they have some OH&S flavour and actually add to your value proposition of doing this job. Sure, I might like to know more about you later on, but my goal right now is to determine if you meet the OH&S criteria I’m looking for.

The only way to get around this is to structure your CV/Résumé in such a way that you can target it toward the job you’re trying to win. If you don’t you will more than likely suffer the frustration that most do when trying to start a new career. Its that frustration that is totally unnecessary when you know what it takes to win the job you’re after.
