It’s bad enough to be leaving a career that you may have intended on continuing for some time, let alone have to face telling an employer that you have been medically discharged.
This dilemma haunts most people who are being medically discharged. Who would want to hire someone who is already broken?
All is not lost. Things aren’t as drastic as they may seem. There are two strategies we encourage people to use when talking to employers about why you are leaving Defence. The trap most people fall in to is to want to tell the truth about their...

Have you ever seen a job vacancy advertising for Generalists? No – That’s because there aren’t any. There are certainly HR Generalists and IT Generalists. But no one is hiring for someone who can do almost anything. So your application shouldn’t be written in this fashion.
Why then do I see that almost everyone’s CV/Résumé screams out “I’m a generalist and can do almost anything”?
I know you want to cover as many bases as you can, but if I’m hiring for a IT Network Engineer, I really don’t care if...

Changing jobs is widely recognised as being almost as stressful as a divorce, a family death or moving house. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the average time to gain new employment in 2014 was 13 weeks.
Time unemployed costs you and your family (yes that sounds obvious, but many don’t realise it until it's too late). The longer you’re unemployed, the less confident you are. The pressure to find employment to support your family compounds things. Your ability to take advantage of a good opportunity when it presents is...

Customer Feedback
I was fortunate to attend three outplacement sessions with Paul Smith at Trans-Civ. His knowledge of Defence, the job market and employer needs coupled with his Trans-Civ job preparation process were invaluable in preparing me for my next job. I found one of the hardest things an ex service member can do is talk about themselves. During our service we're continually reminded 'it's all about the team' etc, when posed with the question 'tell me a bit about yourself?' Paul was able to relate to my experiences and put things into context in a way that was easy to understand and communicate. As a result I presented for three interviews, was successful on two, missing out by a small margin on the third. Paul and his team at Trans-Civ have created a great transitional platform for ex-Defence and I am a testament to that. I commend Paul and his team on their great work. Well done.
