First Impressions

Tuesday, February 17, 2015 5:33 am

In the past most first impressions were formed face to face and often with a handshake. Sure, after meeting you, I might have searched the web to learn more about you. But that paradigm has shifted: the face to face handshake is now the 2nd (or maybe 3rd or 4th) impression. The current trend is to seek information at our fingertips before potentially wasting time preparing for meetings, when some answers can be found in a few minutes of doing a Google search.

But fear not. According to a study done by Chitika, you only need to focus on page 1 of Google results because most people never go beyond the first page, and the first three links get almost all the clicks. Since your LinkedIn profile is likely to show up at the top of page 1, it will probably be all you need to make a good first impression but don’t discount Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and anything else that may harm your professional identity now or in the future.

Your digital identity has now become your first impression and has all the power to engage or turn potential employers away. Actor, humourist and social commentator Will Rogers once said, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression,” making it that much more important to build an appropriate and authentic online profile.

Most employers (approx 91%) will evaluate potential candidates via the web, before considering interviewing them.  If they dislike what they find or identify inconsistencies in you what you have claimed in your job application, then your chances of winning the position are greatly reduced.

These are the cold, hard facts of reality.

Like your application, your Linked-In Profile needs to showcase your proven employment background to align to your chosen job targets. Lucky for you, we are experts in Linked–In profile development.
