How to approach job seeking in 2015 - Step 2

Tuesday, January 20, 2015 2:46 am

Step 2 is even more important for ex-Defence members, as even though you have done the right thing and have aligned the info the reader is looking for on the front page of your application, the impact of what you want to say is clouded, or diminished because of the loss in translation of military terms used.  You know what you mean and your friends know what you mean, but does the average Joe Blow?  When you lose the impact of your story through misinterpretation, all your hard work is gone to waste.

If you get Steps 1 and 2 right, you will get an interview for almost every application you send out.  But to get these right, you need to do your homework to stay competitive.  Use social media (Facebook and Linked-In) to gather intel about the organisation, industry and specific job you’re targeting.  Don’t discount the value of your personal networks. It is still highly beneficial to gain a personal referral from someone who knows what you can do, can vouch for your work ethic and aptitude and make a strong recommendation that you are a strong contender for the role you are targeting. In a market of seemingly identical candidates, the word of one trusted colleague to another is a great way for you to get noticed.
